With no dialogue to rely on, her face had to speak and her brows became her most powerful tool. Thin, arched, and dramatically penciled into a soft, downward curve, they created that mix of innocence and mischief that made her a star.
Women across the decade copied them obsessively. Beauty magazines taught readers how to pluck their brows into Clara’s exaggerated shape; department stores sold “It Girl Brow Pencils;” and flappers everywhere embraced the look as a symbol of modernity, rebellion and cinematic glamour. Clara Bow influenced make-up, she also shaped the entire the flapper look of 1920s beauty.
