Lipstick on the Legs: A 1940s Trick Women Actually Used

During World War II, when nylon stockings disappeared from store shelves and rationing re-shaped every part of daily life, women became masters of improvisation. One of the most surprising and strangely glamorous tricks was using lipstick on their legs to mimic the sheen of real stockings.

Most women already used leg make-up or gravy browning to tint their legs, but lipstick added something extra; a subtle, silky highlight that made bare legs look like they were covered in fine hosiery.

Women would:

  • mix a dab of red lipstick with cold cream.
  • blend it lightly along the shins.
  • create a soft, luminous “stocking shine.”
  • sometimes even draw a faux stocking seam up the back of the leg.

It was clever, resourceful and undeniably chic, which was a small act of beauty defiance in a decade defined by scarcity.

This tiny swipe of lipstick was morale, femininity, and ingenuity rolled into one.
