Red lipstick may feel timeless, but its story stretches back thousands of years. Long before beauty influencers and luxury cosmetic counters, people were finding ways to colour their lips with rich shades of red.

Some of the earliest evidence comes from ancient Mesopotamia, where gemstones were crushed into powders and applied to the lips. Ancient Egyptians also embraced lip colour, with women of status using pigments made from natural ingredients to create bold cosmetic looks. Even Cleopatra was said to favour dramatic lip colours, proving that statement lips have always had a place in beauty history.

The popularity of red lipstick continued through various civilizations, although attitudes toward it changed dramatically over time. In some eras, a red lip symbolized wealth, power, and status. In others, it was viewed with suspicion or considered too daring for respectable women.

Everything changed in the early twentieth century. As cosmetics became more widely available, red lipstick transformed into a symbol of glamour and modern femininity. Hollywood played a major role in its rise, with screen legends helping turn the red lip into one of the most iconic beauty looks of all time.

Today, red lipstick remains one of the few beauty products that never truly goes out of fashion. From classic crimson to deep berry shades, every generation seems to rediscover its power.

What’s fascinating is that although formulas have evolved dramatically, the appeal remains remarkably similar. A swipe of red lipstick can still communicate confidence, elegance, rebellion, glamour, or all four at once.

Beauty History Verdict: Trends come and go, but the red lip has survived for thousands of years. That’s not a beauty trend. That’s a beauty legend.
