Let’s jump right in, into obtaining the legendary Greta Garbo’s brow technique!
1. Remove or mute the natural brow
- Shave or heavily pluck: Garbo’s brows were reduced to near‑nothing.
- Bleach when needed: On some productions, brows were lightened to disappear under powder.
2. Map the new shape
- Grease pencil first: A soft, waxy pencil (early eyeliner) was used to sketch a higher, elongated line above the natural brow.
- Shape philosophy: Thin, extended, slightly downward‑tilted or straight—expressive rather than “pretty.”
3. Draw and soften
- Draw the full line: From inner brow to almost the temple.
- Soften edges: Smudged lightly with fingertip or brush so it photographed as a clean but not harsh stroke.
4. Set with powder
- Press powder over top: To fix the line and matte down shine for studio lights.
Result: a completely controlled, sculpted brow that lifted and re‑designed the entire face.
