In Ancient Greece, olive oil was more than a culinary staple — it was a cornerstone of beauty, health and athletic ritual. Greeks believed the body should be cared for as an extension of the mind and olive oil massage became one of the most important practices for maintaining strength, radiance and balance. Used by athletes, soldiers and elite women, it offered nourishment, protection, and a luminous finish that aligned with Greek ideals of natural beauty.
Olive oil was massaged into the skin before and after bathing to soften, hydrate and shield the body from the sun and wind. Its rich concentration of antioxidants and healthy fats helped maintain suppleness and resilience. Athletes used oil to warm muscles, prevent injury, and highlight the physique, while women applied it to keep the skin smooth and youthful. In many households, olive oil was infused with herbs like rosemary or lavender for added therapeutic benefits.
This ritual reflects the Greek belief that beauty and wellness were inseparable. Olive oil massage was both practical and philosophical — a daily act of care that honoured the body and promoted harmony.
