Best Exfoliants for Each Skin Type

Choosing the right exfoliant for your skin type is essential for getting results without irritation. Each skin type benefits from different ingredients, strengths, and frequencies — and using the wrong one can quickly lead to sensitivity or dehydration.

Skincare products labeled with ingredients and recommendations for four skin types
A curated bathroom display pairs skincare products with recommended ingredients for dry, oily, sensitive, and normal skin.

Sensitive Skin: Choose lactic acid, mandelic acid or enzyme exfoliants (papaya, pineapple). These dissolve dead skin cells gently without disrupting the barrier. Avoid physical scrubs and strong acids entirely.

Dry Skin: Dry skin needs exfoliation that smooths texture while adding hydration. Lactic acid is ideal because it exfoliates and hydrates at the same time. Low‑percentage urea (2–5%) is another excellent option for softening rough patches.

Dehydrated Skin: Focus on gentle lactic acid or enzyme exfoliation. These remove dull buildup so hydration can penetrate more effectively. Avoid strong acids and clay‑based exfoliating masks, which worsen dehydration.

Oily Skin: Oily skin often benefits from salicylic acid (BHA), which penetrates pores and reduces congestion. It should still be used moderately — 1–3 times weekly depending on tolerance. Pair with hydration to prevent dehydration.

Normal Skin: Most gentle acids work well. Lactic, mandelic or enzyme exfoliants maintain clarity without stressing the barrier.

The right exfoliant supports your skin rather than overwhelms it — keeping texture smooth, hydration balanced and the barrier healthy.
