Canadian Flapper Nightlife Series: Part I — Montréal: Canada’s Jazz‑Age Capital

Montréal was the beating heart of Canadian nightlife in the 1920s. Its French influence, cosmopolitan energy and reputation for indulgence created a nightlife scene unlike anywhere else in the country. Speakeasies weren’t just hidden bars — they were glamorous, smoky, European‑infused escapes filled with jazz, dancing, cocktails, and cabaret performances.

American tourists crossed the border specifically for Montréal’s nightlife, escaping stricter U.S. Prohibition laws. Flappers here dressed boldly: shorter hemlines, dramatic makeup, finger waves, and perfume that felt Parisian. Montréal’s nightlife was modern, daring and unapologetically decadent — the closest thing Canada had to a mini Paris.
