Sensitive skin needs extra care, and certain ingredients can trigger redness, stinging, or irritation almost instantly. Avoiding these helps keep the barrier calm, comfortable and protected.

1. Fragrance (Synthetic + Natural)
Fragrance is one of the most common irritants. Even “natural” essential‑oil fragrance can cause reactions. Fragrance‑free formulas are always the safest choice.
2. Essential Oils
Lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus oils, tea tree — all can be sensitizing, especially when used daily. They may smell lovely but they’re too reactive for sensitive skin.
3. Alcohol (Drying Types)
SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol can strip moisture and weaken the barrier, making sensitivity worse. Fatty alcohols (cetyl, stearyl) are fine — they’re hydrating.
4. Harsh Exfoliants
High‑percentage AHAs, BHAs, and physical scrubs can cause micro‑tears and inflammation. Sensitive skin does best with gentle lactic acid or enzyme exfoliation, used sparingly.
5. High‑Strength Retinoids
Prescription retinoids and strong over‑the‑counter formulas can be too aggressive. If using retinol, choose low‑percentage, encapsulated versions and introduce them slowly.
6. Menthol, Camphor, and Cooling Agents
These create a “cooling” sensation that’s actually irritation. They can trigger redness and discomfort in reactive skin.
7. Strong Preservatives
Ingredients like methylisothiazolinone (MI) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) are known sensitizers and best avoided when possible.
8. Heavy Astringents
Witch hazel, strong toners, and mattifying products can strip moisture and destabilize the barrier, increasing sensitivity over time.
