Old Hollywood’s Cold-Cream Cleansing Ritual

Long before double cleansing became a skincare buzzword, Hollywood’s biggest stars were already relying on a simple product to remove a day’s worth of makeup: cold cream.

During the Golden Age of Hollywood, actors and actresses spent long hours under powerful studio lights while wearing layers of greasepaint, powder, lipstick, and eye makeup. Removing those cosmetics wasn’t just a matter of comfort. It was an essential part of skincare.

Enter cold cream.

Unlike modern foaming cleansers, cold cream was applied directly to the face and massaged into the skin. The rich formula helped dissolve makeup, oils, and surface debris before being wiped away with tissues, cotton, or a soft cloth. Many beauty experts of the era considered thorough cleansing one of the foundations of a good complexion.

Cold cream became a fixture on dressing tables throughout North America and Europe. Beauty advertisements promised soft, smooth skin, while magazines regularly featured cleansing rituals that placed cold cream front and centre.

Hollywood helped elevate its status even further. Stars were frequently associated with meticulous beauty routines, and cleansing was often treated as seriously as makeup application itself. The philosophy was simple: beautiful skin started with properly removing the day’s cosmetics.

What’s interesting is how familiar this sounds today. Modern cleansing balms and oil cleansers work on a similar principle by breaking down makeup before the skin is washed. The packaging may be sleeker, and the ingredient lists may be longer, but the basic idea remains remarkably unchanged.

In many ways, today’s double-cleansing trend isn’t a new invention. It’s a modern update of a beauty practice that was already thriving decades ago.

Beauty History Verdict: Before cleansing balms became a skincare trend, Old Hollywood stars were already embracing the power of a rich, makeup-melting cleanse.
