Beauty salons in Canada, really got its start in 1888, when Ontario-born, Canadian entrepreneur Martha Matilda Harper invented the commercial meaning of the word salon and the modern retail beauty salon, transforming hair care from a domestic or barber-based service into a dedicated, women-centered public space.
The Innovation
Harper invented the reclining shampoo chair, designed the first purpose‑built beauty salon and created the world’s first retail franchise system. Her Harper Method network eventually grew to more than 500 salons across North America and Europe, decades before franchising became a mainstream business model.

Her approach emphasized scalp health, natural products and gentle techniques, a contrast to the harsh chemical treatments of the era. This method became the foundation of early 20th‑century beauty culture and influenced later pioneers like Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden.
Social Impact
Harper used her business as a tool for women’s empowerment. She sold franchises exclusively to low‑income and working‑class women, giving them access to financial independence, professional training and business ownership at a time when few such opportunities existed. Her franchise owners, which were known as the “Harper Girls,” became some of the first financially independent female entrepreneurs in North America.
Legacy
The Harper Method empire lasted well into the 1970s, proving the durability of her innovations. Harper invent a salon, a pathway for women to enter public life, earn their own income and shape the future of beauty culture.
