Canadian Flapper Nightlife Series: Part IV — Vancouver: West Coast Eclecticism and Maritime Influence

Vancouver’s nightlife was shaped by maritime trade, Asian immigration, and American visitors arriving by ship or rail. Speakeasies ranged from waterfront hideaways to stylish hotel lounges operating “after hours.”

The Dominion Club sign reads “Jazz, Dancing & Ocean Vistas - Vancouver, Open Nightly”; dancers and jazz musicians perform beneath signs reading “Dance Hall 9 PM - Maritime Flavors” and “The Pacific Hotstompers, West Coast Eclecticism.”
Dancers celebrate beneath glowing lights as a live jazz band plays at The Dominion Club.

Flappers here embraced eclectic style: West Coast ease mixed with modern glamour. Silk dresses, bold lipstick, and finger waves appeared alongside coastal influences. Vancouver’s nightlife felt adventurous, modern, and slightly rebellious — a blend of cultures and coastlines.

I’m Stacey Hobbs, thanks for reading Face by Stace! Until next time.
